13 (who?)
Cemetery of the Innocents by Wannabe-Angel Cemetery of the Innocents by Wannabe-Angel
Photography > Photojournalism > Political

Every year, Catholic parishes in Greater Cincinnati erect a Cemetery of the Innocents, composed of 4,000 wooden crosses to illustrate and commemorate the 4,000 lives ended by abortion daily.
This display is a form of memorial, and also of protest. There have been numerous documented cases of such displays being defaced around the country, and one such attack occurred at the nearby Northern Kentucky University in 2006.
Personally, I found it very interesting that my home parish of St. Mary chose to display their Pro-Life message in the week leading up to the pivotal Obama/McCain election, in which popular opinion around the country seemed to be in favor of Obama, a candidate who had declared a Pro-Choice stance.
I would also like to take this opportunity to state that while I do consider my self liberal in many cases, I also consider myself Pro-Life and I am opposed to the termination of any pregnancy except in the most extreme cases in which the life of the mother is in serious danger. That having been said, please refrain from flaming this piece. I have the right to my opinion the same as you, and all opinions (both agreeing and opposing) will be expressed in a polite, adult fashion. Thank you.

This photo is very impressive, on a technical and ideological level. I mean, I've come across similar photos concerning cemeteries but there's no doubt that the composition and b/w just work perfectly in this case.

I don't know much about photojournalism but in my opinion such a photo should be able to illustrate a story/article and at the same time give the viewer the opportunity to understand it on a personal, emotional level. In this case the atmosphere is simply overwhelming because while I consider myself Pro-Choice this photo makes me see the sadness of the situation on a completely non-judgemental level. It's not one of these polemic "but God says it's bad"-arguments (just an example) but it leaves out all the pro&cons, all the hatred between the two groups and seems to say "look, whatever opinion you have, the case is this: a human being had the chance to exist and in the end was not given this chance" - that is a sad thing, not even Pro-Choice-people who are in their right mind would deny that.
You've managed to create a chain of thought in the viewers mind, not forceful but with simply illustrating an emotional aspect of this topic - something that words and accusations hardly ever can. I will not change my opinion but that doesn't mean I cannot appreciate yours and congratulate you on the way in which you've chosen to represent it.
